I studied Electric and Electronic Engineering in my previous degrees (BEng in Automation, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China (2003) and MSc in Advanced Technologies in Electronics, University of the West of England, UK (2009)). After some years working in industry, I decided to go back to academy because of my interests of auditory research. I am funded by the European Marie Curie project ICanHear (http://www.icanhear.eu/) and started my PhD in the Auditory Technology Lab from August 2013 supervised by Dr. Stefan Bleeck.

Research

The aim of my research is to investigate speech enhancement systems that are biologically inspired. Compared to the normally used signal processing strategies that are used for noise reduction technology, our research based on a completely different idea and is inspired by the physiology of the human auditory system. At the core of my work is the Auditory Image Model (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/aim/). AIM generates “auditory images” of what hear that are somewhat similar to the visual image that we see. The model function is based on observed neural pattern of the human auditory system. Part of my work is also to investigate real time implementation of acoustic signal processing system in order to allow evaluation with normal and hearing impaired people in realistic environment.
